SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN INDIA AND VOLUNTEERING
Contemporary social movements
have led to the emergence of new avenues of volunteerism. Increasing alienation,
powerlessness, contradictions and inequalities in the society facilitate the
opening up of greater space for volunteer engagement and social activism. These
have a major role to play for facilitating people’s participation in human
development. The chapter ‘Social Movements in India and Volunteering’ carried
in pages 58, 59, 60, 61 & 62 of the book ‘Volunteering in India :
Contexts, Perspectives and Discourses’, a flagship publication on volunteerism
was launched by UNDP.
