SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN INDIA AND VOLUNTEERING

Contemporary social movements have led to the emergence of new avenues of volunteerism. Increasing alienation, powerlessness, contradictions and inequalities in the society facilitate the opening up of greater space for volunteer engagement and social activism. These have a major role to play for facilitating people’s participation in human development. The chapter ‘Social Movements in India and Volunteering’ carried in pages 58, 59, 60, 61 & 62 of the book ‘Volunteering in India : Contexts, Perspectives and Discourses’, a flagship publication on volunteerism was launched by UNDP.
