Neoliberal economic policies have undoubtedly sharpened and exacerbated the perceptions among India's subalterns; their livelihoods, lifestyles and identities are under further threat. The state is setting up mega projects such as big dams, steel plants, mining projects etc. which in turn deprives tribals in particular and women as well as children in general of their rights over land, home, access to resources. Though these threats were on the lesser scale earlier, they have now been intensified in a globalising era.

There are 40 million construction workers in India, who are  amongst the most vulnerable segment of the unorganised workforce in the country due to their temporary nature of work and lack of a definite employee-employer relationship. Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon districts make up the Khandesh region of Maharashtra. Khandesh region lies just south of the great belt of mountains and forests that girdles India, and leads directly into the rich cotton tracts of north east Maharashtra. The strip of land between Akkalkuwa and Talode talukas of Nandurbar district and the Tapi River in the North connect Navapur and Nandurbar talukas of Nandurbar district and in the South form a part of Gujarat.
