The activists from Banwasi Sewa Ashram after their initial work with the local communities for some years, Gram Swarajya Samiti emerged out from the struggle launched for land and forest rights, ecological preservation and gender equity. The organisation was registered in its own right during the year 1997, which enabled it to expand its mandate and broaden its horizon in response to the needs of the local communities.
